Ivan D. Sorokin

PhD in Chemistry, junior researcher

Born in Moscow in 1986. Accepted to the Department of Chemistry at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2003, graduated cum laude in 2008, did post-grad studies at the Laboratory of Chemical Kinetics (2008-2011). Started his work at the laboratory in 2005, completing several of the course papers (analytical chemistry, physical chemistry) during his student years there. Graduated with a paper titled "Photochemistry of methyloxirane radical cations stabilized in freonic matrices at 77 K" (with Professor M.Ya. Melnikov in the position of scientific advisor). Finished his PhD studies in physical chemistry in 2013, presenting a thesis by the title of "Photochemical transformations of radical cations of small heterocycles (methyloxiranes, azetidine)" (scientific advisor: Prof. M.Ya. Melnikov) Abridged thesis in Russian..

Gave seminars on physical chemistry for second-year biology students for three non-consecutive semesters (MSU, 2009-2012). Judges academic tournaments for high-school graduates wishing to enter MSU. Teaches chemistry and theory of knowledge at L.I. Milgram School 45 of Moscow. Writes on popular science for "Afisha" and "Bolshoy Gorod" magazines; "Theory and Practice", "Look At Me" and "FURFUR" websites.

Scientific Interests

Reactivity of radical cations, photochemistry of intermediates, EPR and UV/Vis spectroscopy of intermediates, low-temperature chemistry, quantum chemistry.
